Muddy waters: Burst pipes create ‘Yellow River’ in To Kwa Wan

Burst pipes at the junction of Fu Ling Street and Ma Tau Chung Road turned To Kwa Wan into a strange sight yesterday afternoon, after a flood of muddy-looking yellow water erupted from the ruptured pipes at around 2pm. Residents and netizens likened the jaundiced deluge to China’s famous Yellow River, which flows from Qinghai to Shandong.

While this temporary torrent wasn’t quite as far-reaching, the affected roads and lanes were reportedly unusable for two to three hours. Apple Daily reported that temporary road closures and traffic diversions caused congestion up to Chatham Road North, near the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hung Hom.

Personnel from the Water Supplies Department told RTHK (as translated by EJI) that the flood was caused by damage to a 90cm wide salt water main. How it was damaged is apparently still unknown.

A WSD spokesperson said repairs of the “complex underground network” could take up to two days, while Oriental Daily reports that the water supplies for Kowloon City, To Kwa Wan, Hung Hom and Wong Tai Sin had all been affected.
