MTR strikes HKD6 billion deal with Chinese company for next-generation trains

The MTR Corporation Limited has agreed to purchase 93 new eight-car trains from Chinese company CSR Qingdao Sifang Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co., Ltd, reports Ming Pao.

MTR plans to completely replace the first-generation British-made trains on the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, HK Island and Tseung Kwan O lines with the new Chinese trains. The replacements will be delivered by 2018 at the earliest.

The company stated that they selected Qindao Sifang after a thorough tendering process from multiple international suppliers.

They also said the new trains will come with special features and amenities, such as a state of the art illumination system as well as dynamic roadmaps and ring-shaped supports.

However, railway subcommittee member Gary Fani said he is not confident in the safety measures of mainland trains, and added that they should be tested first.
