Mother and daughter hospitalised after drinking alcohol-contaminated Ribena from Central kiosk

A woman, 47, and her daughter, 9, were admitted to hospital after drinking Ribena that was found to contain ethanol (a.k.a. alcohol).

On Feb. 18, they had bought a 330-millilitre bag of the blackcurrant juice drink at a kiosk on Pedder Street next to the Central MTR station, and spat out the liquid immediately after finding it tasted not quite right.

(Although they only bought one bag, apparently one still insisted on trying it after the other spat it out.)

After experiencing sore throats and a burning sensation, the pair went to Tseung Kwan O Hospital where they were admitted for observation, reports the SCMP.

The woman was discharged the following day while the girl was kept under observation for two days.

The police are investigating whether a crime was committed after the Hospital Authority found ethanol in the remaining juice.

This is not the first time a sip of Ribena has landed a Hongkonger in hospital.

In 2011, a man was treated after drinking Ribena that contained sulphuric acid.

It’s unclear whether or not the chemical made its way into the bottle during or after the manufacturing process.

How long before Ribena and vodka cocktails hit Lan Kwai Fong?
