A 40-year-old woman has been arrested for suspected child neglect after her young daughter was discovered wandering around Kowloon alone in the middle of the night.

At about 1am on Monday, a 53-year-old taxi driver surnamed Lee was working in Sau Mau Ping when the 4-year-old girl suddenly jumped into his cab, Apple Daily reports. The child spoke to Lee in simple English and asked to go to Tsim Sha Tsui, where her mother reportedly lives.

Fearing that the girl had been abandoned, Lee drove to Kwun Tong Police Station and filed a police report. After taking the girl to a children’s shelter, police located her mother and arrested her for ill treatment or neglect of a child.

Apple Daily reports that the woman, 40, is from Uganda and holds a recognizance paper issued by the Immigration Department to overstayers seeking asylum.
