Most Hong Kong people have three characters for their Chinese names, or perhaps four, and a Chinese name with five characters is exceedingly rare. But here it is — possibly the most awesome Chinese name ever taken: “激烈的海胆” which translates into “the fierce sea urchin.” The photo of this guy’s HKID card has gone viral on the internet, generating mostly admiring comments.
Sounds like a joke but this person is actually real! He’s a HKUST exchange student and a Frenchman, and his name is Humphrey Dupont. Apparently, he stepped on a sea urchin on his first day at university and decided to take that for his Chinese name. What a laugh it would be to hear someone call “Fierce Sea Urchin, please come to window No. 8” in a public place!
