According to a Chinese Univesity of Hong Kong (CUHK) poll, over 40 percent of those aged between 15 and 29 get their news from online platforms, such as websites and mobile applications. But almost all elderly — those aged over 60 — still read physical newspapers.
In the 1,013 people polled, 56.5 percent of people read online platforms, and with mainly the older population relying on newspapers, this will likely affect print publications in the long-run.
One-third of respondents said they now read fewer paid newspapers because they had switched to reading free newspapers and online news sites.
According to CUHK’s media professor Clement So, traditional media will remain important as a source of news verification, but online news platforms will become increasingly prevalent, as it can empower individuals.
