More pepper spray overnight in Hong Kong as protesters remain angry over alleged activist beating

Two protesters were arrested last night in Hong Kong after police unleashed pepper spray yet again as crowds attempted to retake Lung Wo Road where violent clashes had taken place in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

People started to gather around midnight, with authorities cracking down at around 2am to finally clear the road close to the office of Chief Executive Chun-ying Leung.

Many also gathered outside the police headquarters in Wan Chai to express anger over a video released by TVB yesterday that appeared to show Civic Party member Ken Tsang being carried to a secluded area and beaten by multiple officers. Dozens queued into the night to lodge complaints with police.

Earlier in the evening Tsang spoke to the public, alleging that he was indeed assaulted by the police while the video was taken, as well as before and after. Police have announced that seven officers (two inspectors and five constables) have been identified from the video, and that the case will be looked into in an “impartial” manner.

The Mong Kok protest site was largely quiet, although a small team of activists set to work erecting a 10 metre-high bamboo structure, from which they hung a banner, just before midnight. The structure was however later taken down by the protesters themselves who feared it could give the police reason to clear the occupied area.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive CY Leung announced that he will not be attending today’s Legco meeting due to worries of causing a commotion. Chicken!
