Ming Pao ad urges Hong Kong to protect academic freedom from ‘increasing threats’

A full-page advertisement urging Hong Kong to “defend academic freedom” was published in Ming Pao on Monday.

The letter was signed by hundreds of people, including many public figures, such as former chief secretary Anson Chan, Occupy Central co-founder Chan Kin-man, and Dixon Sing, a professor at HKUST, reports RTHK.

The petition speaks of the “increasing threat” to academic freedom and to the autonomy of academic institutions, including “totally unwarranted personal attacks, particularly in left-wing media”, “public criticism” senior government officials, and “increasing interference” in the choice of teaching materials.
