Millionaires down, multimillionaires up, but many planning to leave Hong Kong

The number of millionaires in Hong Kong has dropped – oh no! It’s okay, though, the number of multimillionaires has increased (phew!), but they’re all planning on buggering off real soon.

According to a survey conducted by the University of Hong Kong and commissioned by Citibank, the number of millionaires (those with HKD1 million or more in liquid assets, duh) dropped from 732,000 to 701,000 last year, making up just 12 percent of Hong Kong’s adult population.

Terrible news.

According to the poll of 3,419 people from September 2014 to last month, however, the number of multimillionaires (liquid assets of HKD10 million or more), climbed 14 percent to reach to 56,000.

But don’t think you’re going to get a chance to cosy up with any of them, as the survey found 11 percent of multimillionaires are planning to leave Hong Kong in the next five years.

Of those, 40 percent cited the education system as their biggest concern, while 24 percent said they were unhappy with their living environment.

Getting to and from The Peak is a bitch, to be fair.
