Mid-life crisis? Man, 42, arrested for stealing Hello Kitty colouring pens from Hong Kong 7-Eleven

There are fears that a 42-year-old man will struggle to complete his art project after he was arrested for stealing a box of Hello Kitty colouring pens from a 7-Eleven store in Kwun Tong this morning.

The suspect, surnamed Yeung, was also carrying a plastic knife and zopiclone sleeping pills, according to Apple Daily (translated by EJI). The pens were an obvious addition to those daily essentials then.

The theft took place around 11am at a 7-Eleven store in Tsui Ping Estate. The man was clearly on a mission, according to the shop-assistant surnamed Chan, who said he simply ignored her offers of assistance, snatched the pens and left.

Brave Chan then attempted to chase the fiend with the help of two passersby. Presumably Yeung is a better at colouring than running, as he only made it 100 metres from the store before the police caught him.

Yeung later told officers that he planned to sell the set of pens (not a colourer after all!), which is part of a joint promotion between 7-Eleven and Hello Kitty products gurus Sanrio.

And he’s not as crazy as he sounds for wanting to do that, given that a similar set is currently going for more than HKD1,000 on Alibaba’s Taobao online marketplace.

Yeung joins the ranks of Hong Kong’s middle-aged Hello Kitty fan group, alongside Chief Executive CY Leung who was involved in a recent controversy after posting a photo of the cartoon kitty in bun form to his Facebook page.
