A Mercedez Benz driver who was shot in his car in the early hours of Tuesday is hospitalized in serious condition, local media reported.

The 45-year-old man, surnamed Yim, retrieved his car parked outside a restaurant on Woo Sung Street in Jordan around midnight. As he drove, he noticed he was being followed by a motorbike.

When he stopped at a traffic light opposite BP International Hotel, the man on the motorbike reportedly shot him in the chest, the bullet piercing through the car’s left window and shattering the glass.

The man then fled on his motorbike in the direction of Canton Road.

Yim raced to the nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital, covering a distance of 1.6km and hitting three taxis along the way. (The taxi drivers were not injured.)

Doctors performed surgery immediately to remove the bullet from his body, Apple Daily reported. The man is in serious condition.

Police have classified the incident as an attempted murder case and are investigating the attacker’s motives. Officers who arrived at the scene of attack found a bullet casing near a traffic light by Austin Road and Canton Road. No arrests have been made as of noon Tuesday.

According to HK01, Yim has connections with the Wo Shing Wo gang, one of the oldest triad groups in the city. The gang is known to be involved in criminal activities including gambling, prostitution and drug trafficking, and also reportedly controlled a number of red minibus routes and extorted millions from drivers.

He has at least 10 criminal offences to his name, including car theft and burglary, Apple Daily reported. The Mercedes driven by Yim is understood to be owned by a Mahjong gambling den.
