Next Saturday night, an Aussie chef will be cooking southern American-style fried chicken at a cha chaan teng-inspired restaurant in Hong Kong. This is globalisation at its finest/tastiest.
For one night only on Sunday July 26, chef Morgan McGlone from Melbourne’s famous fried chicken powerhouse “Belle’s Hot Chicken” will be taking over the kitchen of Soho eatery Ho Lee Fook, offering Hong Kong foodies a taste of his signature “chook” (Aussie slang for chicken, apparently).
Back in Melbourne, McGlone’s restaurant is one of the hottest chicken joints in town, with diners queuing up every night for the chef’s winning Southern-style recipe.
The HKD350 pop-up menu at Ho Lee Fook will feature the yummiest chook cuts – wings, tenders, leg, thigh – served with classic American sides, such as Mac & Cheese, “Almost Arnold’s Beans”, Jalapeno Buttered Corn, and Broccoli and Almond Ranch Salad.
To wash down that greasy fried chicken, the famous Australian beer Victoria Bitters will be offered, while Ho Lee Fook’s uber-fusion cocktails – such as the Pocari Sweato (a mix of Campari, gin, umeshu, and the titular sports drink beloved by every true Hongkonger) and Oolong Apple Tea (oolong-infused vodka) – will be served at an extra charge.
Reservations for the evening are not available, so make sure to line up early. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be a culturally confusing, gastronomically glorious evening!
