Maxim’s bakery fined after customer discovers glove in bread

Hong Kong’s biggest bakery chain Maxim’s has been fined HKD7,500 for an incident last year where a customer found a plastic glove inside a loaf of bread.

The freaky feast ensued in April of last year when a female customer purchased a seemingly innocent walnut loaf from a Maxim’s Simplylife Bakery Cafe in Queensway Plaza, Admiralty.

As she was eating it, however, she discovered – to her horror – a pastry glove languishing inside. That’s a pretty surefire way to lose one’s appetite.

She returned to the store and got a refund and an apology before reporting the incident to a government complaint hotline.

As reported by Ming Pao on Friday, Judge Yu Cheuk-man accepted the group’s admission that the product failed to pass quality control but blamed Maxim’s management for having such a long record of quality-related infractions.

He fined Maxim’s HKD7,500 for the glove offence but said it is up to the Justice Department to decide whether to investigate further and prosecute Maxim’s management.

The company has committed numerous quality control offences (141 in total), including dead worms (yuck!), other foreign objects and, of course, the star from last year’s gross food scandals, gutter oil.
