Police are on the hunt for a man who was caught on CCTV attacking the owners of a tailor shop in Tsuen Wan on Sunday afternoon in a possible triad-related incident.

Speaking to Apple Daily moments after the incident, the business owner, surnamed Wong, told the newspaper that he and his wife were eating lunch inside their store on Chuen Lung Street at 2pm, when suddenly a masked man armed with a 20-inch knife ran into the store.

CCTV footage published online shows Wong, 55, grabbing the wooden stool he was sitting on and using it to shield himself from the masked man.

The man chases Wong around, and then out of, the store. During the pursuit, Wong yelled for help, saying that someone with a knife was trying to attack him, prompting the attacker to flee the scene.

Wong wasn’t injured, but his 53-year-old wife sustained injuries to her hand and was sent to the Yan Chai Hospital for treatment.

Wong told the newspaper that the tailor is a family business, and that he took over from his father more than 40 years ago.

He added that the business doesn’t owe any debts, but claimed that since 2017 there have been incidences of intimidation by mysterious men, and that someone had splashed red paint onto his shopfront on a few occasions.

Splashing red paint onto a shopfront is widely believed to be an intimidation tactic used by triad gangs as a “warning.”

Police said no one has been arrested yet and that they’re looking for a man aged between 20 and 30 years old, about 1.7 meters tall, wearing a white coat, dark trousers, dark shoes, a dark baseball cap, and a black face mask.

When asked by Coconuts HK if the incident is being treated as a triad-related case, officers confirmed that they were still investigating the case and that the matter has been handed over to the Tsuen Wan Police District’s Anti-Triad action team.
