A Hong Kong court yesterday heard that a man allegedly raped two women, and attempted to rape another, by approaching them through dating apps and pretending to be a police officer.
Mui Kam-tim, 26, pleaded not guilty to charges of rape, attempted rape, and indecent assault at the High Court yesterday morning, Ming Pao reports.
In their opening statement to the court, lawyers for the prosecution said that Mui got to know his victims through Instagram and a dating app called Sweet Ring. To win their trust, he told them that he was a policeman when actually he was a kitchen hand.
The court heard that Mui previously worked as an airport security guard and warehouse worker, but had never been a cop.
He met his first victim, a 21-year-old student referred to in court as “Q”, on April 29, 2017 at a bar at Chong Hing Square in Mong Kok, where he reportedly told Q he worked for the Yau Tsim Mong police district’s anti-triad unit, on.cc reports.
At about 5am, Q said she felt dizzy and Mui offered to take her somewhere to rest. When she realized he wanted to take her to a hotel, she resisted, but Mui allegedly dragged her into a hotel room and groped her.
When Mui told Q not to cry, she responded: “You’re going to rape me, why wouldn’t I cry?”
She then proposed paying him to let her go. Mui allegedly took HK$100 (about US$12) from Q’s purse and proposed she transfer another HK$1,000 (US$128) over to him, and gave her his account number.
His second victim was a 33-year-old woman referred to in court as “R.” The pair met over Instagram in August 2017, and agreed to meet in for the first time at a bar on September 16, 2017, where he told R that he did “government security work.”
A few days later on September 23, when R met up with Mui again for drinks, she vomited, and the defendant took her to a hotel to rest, allegedly taking about HK$300 (US$38) from her wallet to pay for a room.
While the two were in the hotel room, Mui and R had sex, and at one point Mui allegedly forced R to engage in anal sex, despite R saying she didn’t want to. The pair left the hotel at around 7am on September 24, 2017.
Finally, on September 26, Mui went out for drinks with a 31-year-old single mother referred to in court as “P.” She reported feeling dizzy, and Mui took her home at 3am.
When they approached the doorstep, Mui claimed he forgot his keys and asked P if he could stay the night. P allowed him to stay at her home and said she would sleep in her daughter’s room.
Mui then reportedly took a shower, came out in just a towel, pulled P into her room, and allegedly raped her. The court heard that P tried to resist, but was afraid of waking up her daughter.
The defendant left the home the following afternoon, and P found HK$1,000 was missing from her purse. She called Mui, who denied stealing the cash.
The prosecution told the court that at the end of September 2017, P decided to write about the experience in an online forum called “Beauty Exchange,” which prompted Q and R to contact her saying they had experienced something similar.
The three women reported the case to police on October 4, and Mui was arrested shortly afterwards.
