A 28-year-old man suspected of raping a woman in her Tuen Mun flat was arrested late last night, within 60 hours of the crime, and just six hours after police publicized the case.

Just after midnight today, police issued a statement confirming that the suspect, surnamed Lam, had been arrested in connection with the rape. The man was apprehended in Mong Kok and is a resident of Tuen Mun, Apple Daily reports.

During a press conference yesterday afternoon, police said the assault occurred in an apartment on Po Tin Estate at 11am on Friday. Inspector Wong Wing-hung from the Tuen Mun District Crime Unit said the suspect had followed the victim to her apartment building, took the lift with her, then got out before her floor to allay suspicion. After taking the stairs up to the victim’s floor, he waited outside her door.

“When [the victim] opened her door, the suspect pushed her back inside, forcibly subdued her, and raped her,” Wong said. As the suspect appeared to know where the victim lived, the inspector said police had not ruled out the possibility that he had followed her home on a previous occasion.

The suspect reportedly stayed in his victim’s flat for an hour after the rape before fleeing. After he left, the victim called the police, who found footage of the suspect on the estate’s surveillance cameras. He was described as an ethnically Chinese man, around 170cm tall, of medium build, with black hair that had been partially dyed blond. He spoke fluent Cantonese.

Lam was arrested late last night in Mong Kok, approximately 60 hours after the rape. The 28-year-old, who is reported to be a resident of Tuen Mun’s Siu Hong Court, had not been home since Friday morning. According to reports, he was recently released from jail and has a criminal record of indecent assault and robbery.
