A man reportedly fell 150 metres to his death while trying to take a selfie on Lion Rock at around 1pm on Saturday. The man, who was estimated to be in his 30s, was seen taking selfies by fellow hikers before venturing into an unfenced area.
A witness said he suspected the man was trying to “get a better view of the lion’s head”, Apple Daily reports. Witnesses on the scene said they then heard a scream and saw the man clinging onto some grass on the hillside. However, the grass broke off, and the hikers reportedly saw the man fall straight down to his death.
Paramedics fom the Government Flying Service found the man 150 metres down from where he had fallen, and certified him dead at the scene. Firefighters arrived three hours later to retrieve the man’s body and the bag he was carrying, but reportedly found no forms of identification.
Lion Rock is a granite peak in Kowloon Tong, known for resembling its leonine namesake, as well as providing a vantage point of Kowloon City and Hong Kong Island.
