Calling into question his fitness to handle frustration as a motorist in Hong Kong, a man yesterday attacked a driving examiner after failing his license test in Causeway Bay.

According to Apple Daily, the candidate, in his 20s, had flunked the exam on multiple occasions and lashed out yesterday afternoon about 2:30pm after again failing to pass the test at So Kon Po Driving Test Centre.

His victim, a 41-year-old ex-police officer surnamed Kam, was left with injuries to his left hand and left leg after the attack, which the Transport Department called “unusual.”

The newspaper reported that Kam, who has worked as a license examiner for four years and was known to be a tough on candidates, drew the ire of the candidate after delivering the negative assessment, leading to an argument.

The man first swore at Kam, then punched him, causing him to fall into an air-conditioner, which was damaged, according to Headline Daily

Other driving instructors overheard the ruckus and saw Kam run from the examination center, yelling “he hit me,” followed the candidate, described as “tattooed.”

The candidate first denied that he had attacked Kam and even asked the witnesses to call the police. He did not, however, stay around to meet officers and soon fled.

Apple Daily reported this afternoon that officers arrested a 21-year-old man surnamed Hui in North Point at 11:30pm last night. He was released on bail pending further investigation, and has to report back to the police station in late August.

A spokesman from the Transport Department called the case “unusual” noting no similar incidents had happened last year.

Candidates who fail the examination are able to lodge an appeal with the Transport Department, which can probe whether the result was fair.

Those who punch their examiners, however, are presumably not looked upon favourably.
