Man pays for bus to Ocean Park with HKD1000 bill

We thought it was ridiculous when a kid paid for the bus with a HKD500 bill, but the stakes have been raised: a man was seen paying for the bus with a HKD1000 bill.

The man, aged around 50 and wearing a suit, was taking the 629 Citybus from Admiralty to Ocean Park yesterday.

“I don’t have any change,” he warned the driver in Mandarin.

He apparently had no choice but to use the largest-denomination banknote in circulation to pay for the bus, reports Apple Daily.

The full fare is HKD10.60, so perhaps, like someone suggested on Facebook, he had mistakenly skimmed over the decimal point.

The HKD50 bill you also see in the till was apparently handed over by a family of four, which therefore overpaid by only HKD7.6.

The bus driver said that in his 35-year career, the most he’s ever seen put into the till was a HKD100 bill.

When you’re really itching to go see pandas and ride the Abyss, you’ve gottta do what you’ve gotta do.
