Man jumps to his death after stopping cab on bridge en route to airport

Police are investigating the death of a 57-year-old man after he reportedly jumped off Ting Kau Bridge in front of his taxi driver.

The deceased, surnamed Yeung, hailed a cab from Tin Heng Estate in Tin Shui Wai at around 3pm yesterday, and asked to be driven to the airport, Oriental Daily reports

However, Yeung reportedly complained he felt dizzy and nauseated when the cab was on Ting Kau Bridge, and asked that the car be pulled over.

After stopping, the taxi driver, a 67-year-old man surnamed Chan, said Yeung gave him his HKID and asked that he contact his family, before crossing the bridge and jumping over the side.

Chan, who was understandably shocked, immediately called the police, who processed the case as attempted suicide. At around 4pm, a volunteer team found Yeung, but he was certified dead at the scene.

Initial investigations suggest no suspicious circumstances. No suicide note was found, although a police spokesperson said Yeung was going through “financial problems”.

Last Friday, in a separate case, an insurance broker also died after falling off Ting Kau bridge. The broker was reportedly going through a messy divorce, and had driven to the bridge after sending a suicide note to his estranged wife via Whatsapp.
