Man jailed after attempt to use GoGoVan as a drug delivery service

A Hong Kong man tried to use a GoGoVan to get methamphetamine delivered.

It didn’t go so well. He was jailed today for more than four years, reported RTHK.

The GoGoVan driver — presumably used to transporting bulkier items — became suspicious after picking up the small package in August 2016.

The item claimed to be a “gift for a friend.” The driver suspected the gift was drugs. It was — about 16 grams of “ice.”

Joseph Chan, aka the “friend” — the package’s recipient — was caught after the driver tipped off police.

Chan, 34, was also found in possession of a small amount of the drug, which he admitted was meant for another buyer, RTHK reported.

The suspect had earlier pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and possession of a dangerous drug.

The High Court judge — considering his guilty plea and mitigation by the defence — sentenced Chan to four years and eight months in prison.

The court heard Chan had been addicted to drugs since 2008 and had become unemployed in 2016.

According to RTHK, the judge described the defendant — who previously emigrated to Canada, studied in the UK and returned to Hong Kong — as a “bright and intelligent” young man.

He certainly isn’t the only person to try the ol’ GoGo van drug delivery.

Just last week,  Hong Kong police arrested two suspected drug dealers thanks to a driver from the company, wrote Asia Times.

The driver, 33, got suspicious about the contents of a paper bag he was hired to deliver from the Sheung Shui to Kowloon.

The couple who sent the paper bag claimed they couldn’t drive it themselves because the window of their car had been smashed.

Unconvinced, the driver looked inside and found white power, suspected to be 27 grams of ketamine.
