A 26-year-old man apparently fell to his death in the early hours of Tuesday after trying to pick up AirPods he had dropped onto a canopy outside the windows of his apartment, according to local media reports.

Sing Tao Daily reported that the tragedy happened at around 1am.

The man was found lying on the side of a street in Sai Wan with severe head injuries.

Paramedics arrived at the scene moments later and rushed the victim to Queen Mary Hospital for treatment, where he was later pronounced dead, the paper added.

The daily said it understood that the man was married and worked in construction.

His wife and child are currently in mainland China and he was staying with his brother at the apartment.

The paper said the victim is believed to have been playing video games when he dropped the AirPods onto the metallic canopy on the exterior of the building.

It added that the man tried to pick up the wireless earphones but unfortunately fell to his death.

Sing Tao Daily noted that there were bloodstains at the site of the accident as well as AirPods believed to belong to the victim.

Police also found the charger case for the earphones and a smartphone with an online game loaded.

The paper also reported that several eyewitnesses thought he was trying to commit suicide and attempted to stop him.

But he replied saying he was not trying to jump to his death. The victim is believed to have slipped and fallen shortly after.

The paper also quoted the police as saying that preliminary investigations showed that the man had accidentally stumbled and fallen from his apartment but the cause of death is to be determined after an autopsy. The case is currently classified as a case of falling from height.
