An elderly man who was strangled and stomped on the head in a brutal attack in Pacific Place has died after eight days.
In a video circulating on the internet since last week, the 70-year-old man can be seen sitting near the glass railing on the third floor of the high-end shopping mall in Admiralty when he was suddenly grabbed in the neck by a man in black on March 9 evening.
The attacker then kicked and stomped the senior citizen on the head at least eight times.
A government press statement released on Friday said the elderly man passed away on Thursday evening.
“Sustaining head injuries, he was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in unconscious state and was subsequently certified dead [Thursday] evening,” the statement read.
“A post-mortem examination will be conducted to ascertain the cause of his death.”
A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the attempted murder case on March 10.
The arrestee was charged with one count of attempted murder last Friday and the case was mentioned at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts the next day.
Local media reported that the arrestee was a 23-year-old deliveryman from New Zealand and was sent to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre after appearing in court.
The next mention will be on next Friday.
The statement also noted that police reclassified the attempted murder case as murder.
