Man held for murder of Hong Kong taxi driver beaten by passenger and two others

A 25-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a Hong Kong taxi driver who was reportedly beaten by a passenger and two other men in a dispute about the fare.

Police were called to a roundabout outside Ying Tai House in Fu Tai Estate, Tuen Mun, at 1:30am on Sunday morning after a report of a man being assaulted.

On arrival they found a 55-year-old taxi driver with wounds to his head and hands.

He claimed he had been assaulted by a passenger who disputed the fare, and that two other men arrived on the scene and helped with the beating.

The 26-year-old male passenger and a 30-year-old man were arrested on a joint charge of wounding and appeared at Tuen Mun Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Yesterday, however, the taxi driver – who arrived at Tuen Mun Hospital on the day of the alleged assault in a conscious state – was certified dead at 2:45pm.

A third man, aged 25, has since been arrested for murder.

Police are still waiting on the results of a post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.
