Man stabbed in the ankle and robbed of HKD4 million by gang in Sheung Shui

Police are on the hunt for four men who reportedly stabbed and robbed a man of HKD4 million in Sheung Shui this morning.

At around 8:30am the victim, 39, and his wife were walking along a footbridge on Chi Cheong Road carrying a rucksack and a luggage. A police source told SCMP that the baggage contained over USD400,000 (HKD3.1 million) and EUR80,000 (HKD649,000).

Four medium-built men, believed to be South Asian, approached the couple and attacked the man on his left ankle with a knife and snatched away the rucksack and luggage, Oriental Daily reports, quoting a witness.

A witness who posted “Four robbers slashed the victim down to the bone [on his ankle],” according to Judy Lo, who uploaded a picture of the scene on Facebook. He was later taken to North District Hospital.

Another witness, who was giving out free newspapers on the footbridge when the incident happened, told Apple Daily that the attackers had been waiting on the bridge for 30 minutes until the victim appeared. They fled the scene in separate ways after the robbery. Police took away a pair of sunglasses and the handle of the suitcase, which were left at the scene, for further investigations.

Initial investigations showed the culprits, who were all wearing a cap, might have known their target and his routing as it appeared to be an organised robbery and the victim was ambushed in the incident, while most netizens were convinced that the robbery was a revenge hit.

According to Apple Daily, the couple are parallel traders. They arrived in Hong Kong at around 8am from the mainland today after being hired to distribute the money to specific persons in the city.
