A 60-year-old man fell 60 metres to his death while trying to help a hiker who was stuck on a cliff face in Lantau North Country Park near Tung Chung.
Cheung Wing On had been hiking for over a decade and had retired in the last few years.
On Sunday at 8am, he set out on an organised trek with a group of 50 people.
Two hours later, they encountered a hiker in distress about 20 to 30 metres down the side of Mo Tin Ngai cliff, reports Apple Daily. He had apparently tried to take a dangerous shortcut.
One of the hikers, a 55-year-old experienced mountaineer, lowered himself down using a rope.
Cheung also started to climb down the cliff in order to help the rescue effort, but slipped and fell 60 metres.
The Government Flying Service sent a helicopter and a rescue team but it took an hour before they were able to reach the man.
Cheung was later declared dead at Tuen Mun Hospital.
According to Apple Daily, this is the third time someone has died trying to save another person at the same spot.
