Man charged with arson over MTR fire attack that injured 19

The man who started a fire on the Hong Kong MTR during rush hour on Friday has been charged with arson.

The fire started by 60-year-old Cheung Kam-fai injured at least 19 passengers in a packed carriage on a train traveling the Tsuen Wan line to Tsim Sha Tsui from Admiralty station.

Cheung is in critical condition in the hospital from serious burns and thus not expected to appear at Kowloon Kowloon City Court where the case will be mentioned today, according to SCMP.

In an unverified video of the fire, Cheung can be seen lying on the ground with his pants burning while bystanders beat the flames with their jackets.

He is believed to be mentally ill.
