A middle-aged man inexplicably carrying US$3 million in his backpack was attacked by two masked young triad members during an attempted robbery outside Sheung Shui MTR yesterday.

The incident took place at around 8am yesterday when the unidentified victim was outside the train station, SCMP reports. Two unarmed masked robbers who had been waiting near the station car park attacked the man and tried to steal his backpack, but were thwarted by a man who was passing by.

The passerby subdued one of the robbers, aged 16, until the police arrived to arrest him. The teen’s accomplice fled the scene and is still at large.

A police source told the SCMP that the 16-year-old belongs to the Wo Shing Wo triad, and had been ordered to rob the victim. The suspect said he was given information on when and where the victim would be, and was promised HK$1 million as a reward for the theft.

Thanks to the help of the passerby, the victim left with his backpack before the police arrived. SCMP‘s source said the man may have been hired to transport cash illegally across the border.

Anyone who witnessed the attempted robbery or has any information to offer is urged to contact the police.
