Police have arrested a 52-year-old man after CCTV cameras captured video of him beating a dog with what appears to be a golf club outside a grocery store in Mong Kok in the early hours of this morning.
According to on.cc, police apprehended the suspect at about noon today after local outlets posted footage of him beating the dog. His name is currently being withheld until he is formally charged.
Video of the incident, which some readers may find upsetting, show the moment the man lunges toward the black dog and strikes it across the back with the club as it was sleeping on a table while chained up outside the grocery store on Cheung Wong Road.
The dog tries in vain to escape, at one point running underneath the table, only for the man to climb over and under the table as he attempts to keep striking it.
The dog, a male mongrel, was saved after a female passerby, a 38-year-old woman surnamed Cheuk, heard the dog’s cries and ran to its aid, prompting the suspect to flee the scene.
The attack lasted less than a minute.
Cheuk called the police, and the dog was taken to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) headquarters in Wan Chai for treatment.
The case has been classified as one of cruelty to animals, which carries a maximum penalty of three years behind bars, and a fine of up to HK$200,000 (US$25,600).
