Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murdering his wife who he thought was cheating on him.

Just before 3pm yesterday police received a report from a 57-year-old man surnamed Law who claimed that his wife had attempted to commit suicide at their apartment unit in the Nam Sham Estate, a public housing estate in Shek Kip Mei.

When officers arrived at the 11th floor apartment, they found a 40-year-old woman, named Huang Ling, unconscious on the living room floor. She was rushed to Caritas Medical Centre, but was declared dead just before 3:30pm.

Speaking to reporters last night, chief inspector Man Chi-yeung from the Sham Shui Po district crime squad said the woman was discovered with a knife wound some 5 centimeters-long on the left-side of her back.

After a preliminary investigation of the premises, they found a blood-stained fruit knife that was about 20 centimeters-long inside a trash can by the stairs outside the apartment.

The couple had been married for 17-years. Law is a Hongkonger, while Huang came from the mainland, and is believed to have moved to Hong Kong a few years ago, Apple Daily reports.

The couple have two sons, aged 10 and 16, were not inside the apartment unit at the time.

Sham Shui Po district councillor Tam Kwok-kiu told Ming Pao that the 300 square feet unit at the center of the case was once occupied by eight people — Law, Huang, their children, Law’s parents and his brothers — and that Law’s parents and brothers were transferred to another unit in 2012 because of overcrowding.

Tam also quoted neighbors saying that they heard the couple shouting in their apartment over the last few days, but it was not clear what the argument was about.

Police characterized incident as a “couple-related dispute”, with police sources telling Apple Daily the suspect had accused his wife of having an affair.

The couple were believed to be unemployed, but according to Ming Pao, a neighbor said that Huang would make ends meet by taking on part-time casual work selling food and underwear at street stalls.

The neighbor said that she also played mahjong with Huang, and that some people have spotted Law standing outside her apartment to spy on his wife.
