Man arrested for adding MSG flavouring to letters

Police have arrested a former civil servant for adding a white powder (monosodium glutamate or more commonly known as the food additive MSG) to letters addressed to the Securities and Futures Commission, Hong Kong Monetary Authority and about three media outlets.

Apparently the retired civil servant, surnamed Lam, was trying to get the authorities attention as he lost HK$600 when an online stock dealing platform malfunctioned.

Police say that although the content of his letters were not intimidating, the white powdered substance posed a threat to those receiving the letters. Police believe he wanted the attention of the authorities but hey, why can’t we give him the benefit of the doubt – we say he was writing the letters while cooking and some food additive just happened to have slipped into the envelopes!
