The elderly truck driver who ran a red light and caused a fatal minibus crash in Yuen Long last year was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment today.
Cheung Man-leung, aged 71, confessed to causing the collision at District Court today. Five people, including a three-month-old girl and her grandmother, were killed.
Cheung was jailed for two years and had his driving licence suspended for five years, HK01 reports. He said he saw the vehicle next to his medium goods vehicle move slightly and thought the traffic light had turned green, the court heard.
During sentencing, the judge said Cheung was obviously remorseful for his actions, but said he had to be jailed in light of the casualties.
The collision occurred at around on Dec. 18, 2015, when Cheung, who was driving a medium goods vehicle, ran a red light at the intersection of Kam Sheung Road and Tung Wui Road.
He hit a minibus, which then flipped on its side. A total of thirteen people were reported.
