Man, 51, jailed for 4 years after robbing father who was carrying his young infant

A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment after he confessed to robbing a young father of a gold chain while the 22-year-old had his baby strapped to his chest.

According to Oriental Daily, the 51-year-old confessed to robbing a 22-year-old man last September while in District Court today.

On Sept. 17, the defendant, surnamed Chiang, reportedly followed the victim, surnamed Lo, to his home on Tung Choi Street while Lo’s seven-month-old infant was strapped into a baby carrier across his chest.

Chiang allegedly threatened Lo’s son with a two-foot-long iron bar, which he used to hit the 22-year-old on his head. The 51-year-old then snatched a gold chain worth HKD15,000 from Lo’s neck and ran away.

The young father made headlines after he chased Chiang for 500 metres, all while his infant son was attached to his torso.

In court today, the judge reportedly emphasised the seriousness of the case, as Chiang had threatened the child, and caused injuries to the father that “could have been fatal”.

The judge apparently claimed that he could sentence Chiang to seven years’ imprisonment, but lessened the sentence based on his willing to confess to his crimes, and compensate Lo of HKD7276.75.

Chiang was caught after CCTV footage showed him pawning the gold chain for HKD11,000. Half of the cash was reportedly spent on drugs and gambling, while the other half was deposited into his bank account.
