A maintenance train caught on fire while on the tracks near LOHAS Park MTR Station earlier today, causing severe delays on the Tseung Kwan O Line for just over two hours.
Speaking to Apple Daily, MTR Corp.’s Head of Operations Francis Li said the incident occurred on the tracks between Tseung Kwan O and LOHAS Park at around 4am.
The vehicle had just completed its maintenance work and was ready to be towed back to the warehouse when it suddenly burst into flames. No injuries were reported, but the tunnel was blackened by smoke which billowed onto the platform at LOHAS Park.
MTR Corp.’s service update pages issued a notice that Tseung Kwan O Line services were suspended from 5:57am to 8:09am due to a fire which erupted on an engineer’s train. Free shuttle bus services were provided between Tseung Kwan O and LOHAS Park stations.
The vehicle which caught on fire is reported to be a HKD72 million rail milling train made in Austria in 2015, according to Oriental Daily. Inspections have been scheduled to determine the cause of the fire.
