Mainland women pay HK$500,000 for HK surrogate mothers

Illegal surrogacy agencies in the mainland are paying Hong Kong women up to HK$500,000 to become surrogate mothers for mainland Chinese couples. According to The Sun, the newspaper found many illegal mainland surrogacy agencies advertising online to attract Hong Kong women to become surrogate mothers, and require them to give birth in Hong Kong hospitals so that the baby will receive a legal Hong Kong ID and receive benefits.

An undercover reporter met with a representative from a mainland surrogacy agency pretending to be interested. According to the agency, the candidate must be young, decent-looking, have a well-proportioned figure, and give birth naturally. The agency even revealed that many young Hong Kong women have chosen to become surrogate mothers for mainland couples. The reporter was offered HK$500,000 to surrogate because she’s a Hong Kong resident.

The surrogate mother will be implanted with the client’s sperm and egg, and the birth certificate must only have the surrogate mother’s name. After giving birth, the surrogate mother must sign a contract that gives the baby up to the mainland couple for adoption. Another agency requested the undercover reporter to stay in Guangzhou for the entire duration of her pregnancy, where the agency will provide room and board and a pui yuet, before returning to Hong Kong to give birth.

Obstetricians warned that surrogate mothers have a higher risk of miscarriage and premature births, which may lead to infertility, and advised Hong Kong women not to sacrifice their health for money.

We thought mainland parents were more keen on getting US citizenships now, read the story here, apparently not!
