Mainland woman denies bribing officer with HK$6,000 cheque

A mainland woman was charged with offering an advantage to public officers after sending a HK$6,000 cheque to the Immigration Department, which prosecutors said is an attempt to speed up her application under the Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals.

However, the woman, Li, claimed that the cheque was intended for a donation to a Taoist temple in Chai Wan and was accidentally put into the envelope she sent to an immigration officer because the desk in her office was very messy.

According to records, Chan asked the immigration officer in charge of her case “to help her fix her application quickly” and allegedly, Li said that the HK$6,000 was the service charge for speedy handling. But Li maintained that the cheque was for a Chai Wan temple to pray for good business and a successful immigration application.
