Mainland man in court after clerks ignore his bank robbery attempts on April Fool’s

A 48-year-old man from Hunan was arrested after allegedly trying to rob three different banks in vain.

His reported attempts were so pathetic that the aspiring criminal almost has us rooting for him.

First, he supposedly tried to rob a Wing Hang Bank branch on Ngau Tau Kok Road in Kwun Tong, unfortunately choosing the date of April 1 to commit the deed, reports Apple Daily.

He apparently cut the line and slipped a piece of paper explaining he was robbing the bank to the teller. The clerk, clearly busy but also helpful, thought the man just needed something thrown away and promptly discarded it in the nearest bin.

Discouraged but still determined, the man allegedly went on to another bank, this time a Wing Lunk Bank branch on the same road.

He again cut the line and reportedly handed a piece of paper to the teller. Too scared and/or impatient, he walked away before the clerk even read it.

When she finally opened it, the clerk saw the note contained a nonsensical phrase in Chinese handwriting, as well as a demand for HKD100,000.

Turns out that he had meant to write “robbery”, but screwed up the characters and wrote “打却“ (which roughly transaltes to “hit but”) instead of “打劫” – same same, but different.

The bank worker dismissed it as an April Fool’s joke until she turned the paper around and saw that it also beared the words “I have a bomb”. She notified her boss, who immediately called the police.

Two days later, the man reportedly went to a CITIC Bank on Yu Chau Street in Sham Shui Po.

He allegedly handed the third unlucky teller a note demanding HKD10,000 (not very ambitious, this guy!), and this time she got the message.

She quietly hit the hidden alarm button, as they do in movies, and proceeded to prepare the money he asked for, as per bank protocol.

In the process, while turned away from the counter, she whispered that it was a robbery to her colleague.

By the time she turned around, however, the man was already walking away from the teller.

Third time’s the charm! Not.

The security cameras captured the man on video, while his DNA was also recovered from a napkin he left behind. If you haven’t been able to tell, he’s really not good at this whole robbery thing.

The next day, on April 4, he was arrested in Sham Shui Po.

He pleaded not guilty in court yesterday. Poor guy.
