“Play with me!” Playful pooch steals the limelight during Chinese opera performance.

Chinese opera: some people love it, others can’t stand it, but it seems pretty much everyone agrees that this video of a dog recently making his unwanted stage debut is a complete winner.

In a video that’s now making the rounds, we see the dog come on stage and grab onto the sleeve of an actor as he attempts to deliver his lines.

What follows is a hilarious tug of war as the actor unsuccessfully attempts to shake his sleeve loose from the pooch’s jaws. At one point, the actor drags the dog across the stage as he tries to stay in character, while members of the audience — and even actors backstage — can be heard giggling throughout.

According to video-sharing site Sohu, the performance took place in the city of Putian in the Fujian province on March 2, though mainland and local news outlets have thus far been unable to verify it.

It is not known what opera was being performed at the time, although some mainland netizens have joked that maybe it was called Dog bites Lu Dongbin, which is a reference to a Chinese proverb used to describe mistaking kindness for ill-intent. Basically, biting someone who is kind to you is a mistake.

The performance got rave reviews from netizens who praised the dog for his performance, and also the actor for staying in character throughout.
