An Indonesian domestic helper has been arrested in Hong Kong after her employer reportedly found her to be abusing their five-month-old baby.
The employer, surnamed Cheung, apparently discovered the alleged abuse on Monday after reviewing footage from a surveillance camera installed in his flat at On Yam Estate, Kwai Chung.
According to EJI, the footage shows the 45-year-old domestic helper tossing the boy violently and twisting his nose and chin.
Thankfully, the boy, a premature baby who spent his first two months in the hospital, was examined by a doctor who found him to be in good health.
Weirdly, Mrs. Cheung also says the helper previously admitted to rinsing her lower half — with a mug used by the couple’s daughter for brushing her teeth — after using the toilet.
“I just cannot understand why she would not use her own cup, and would rather use my daughter’s,” Mrs. Cheung said.
The maid, who reportedly worked in Taiwan for six years before coming to Hong Kong, is said to be married with two children of her own. The Cheungs say she appeared gentle when she first started the job, but claim her emotional state seemed to change last year.
The couple said they considered firing the helper last year but they were too busy.
The Indonesian Migrant Workers Union stressed that the alleged case of child abuse is isolated, adding most foreign domestic workers do their jobs properly and with heart.
