If you are thinking about a CNY getaway to the neighbouring Macau to save money on air tickets, you can forget about it.
Although Macau has always been a top choice for Hong Kongers because of its proximity and affordability, this Chinese New Year holiday has attracted so many Hong Kong tourists to Macau that hotel rooms now cost as much as HK$7,000 a night — and Macau hotels are running at full capacity.
According to the Macau Tourism Board, almost all hotels have no rooms left between Thursday and Monday and that at the top four or five-star hotels, room prices have gone up by HK$4,000 to HK$7000. A night at the popular Venetian Resort on Lunar New Year’s Eve can set you back HK$7,475 per night.
At that price, we’d rather book a plane ticket to somewhere tropical!
