Lunar Loot: Maxim’s reports theft of 84 boxes of mooncakes worth HKD20,000

Hong Kong’s Mid-Autumn Festival: family time and mooncake crime.

After we reported last week that a Hong Kong woman lost HK40,000 in a mooncake scam, we hear that 84 boxes of mooncakes worth around HKD20,000 were stolen from a Maxim’s Cake shop on Monday.

Headline Daily reports that the theft was discovered at 7:30am on Monday when an employee opened the store on Castle Peak Road, Cheung Sha Wan, and discovered the grizzly crime scene.

It is thought the thieves would have had to use a trolly or a vehicle to whisk away their hefty loot. They also reportedly took a number of mooncake coupons, although these are said to be out of date.

Maxim’s has cautioned customers about accepting mooncakes or coupons from suspicious sources.

The heavy pastries are in high demand at this time of year, with Hongkongers gifting them to family and friends for the Mid-Autumn Festival.
