LOL! Government sends HK$1 cheque to Hongkonger

A Hongkonger got the major lols when he opened a letter from the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Department (IRD), only to find a cheque for the amoung of HK$1.

The citizen, although happy to receive money, felt it was an incredible waste of taxpayers’ money for the IRD to send him a HK$1 cheque for tax rebate, as postage fee alone was HK$1.70.

The IRD explained that cheques for tax rebates are usually sent together with the notice of assessment and so no extra postage fee is wasted.

Experts suggests the HK government learn from foreign countries, where citizen’s bank account information is obtained so that tax rebates can be reimbursed directly via a bank transfer.
