In a scene straight out of Seinfeld, some residents of Kwai Chung are up in arms over a glaringly bright billboard that casts a harsh red light into their homes.
District Councillor Lam Siu Fai told Apple Daily that he started receiving an onslaught of complaints about the billboard, located on Lei Muk Road in Kwai Chung, around 7pm on Tuesday night.
Among residents’ complaints, he said, were that “their flats were filled with red light and it was so bright that the people couldn’t open their eyes.”
“There were more than 20 complaints received in one hour,” he told the newspaper.
The local lawmaker then called the police, who arrived on the scene and contacted the person in charge of the sign. The billboard was finally turned off around 10pm.
The police were called again shortly after 7pm on Thursday night, and the billboard was turned off within the hour.
Area residents have been complaining about the billboard for months, according to Sing Tao. The newspaper reported that the billboard is operated by Sharp — and NOT Kenny Rogers Roasters — and that the company had signed an agreement to turn the lights off at 7pm.
Lam criticized the company for failing to communicate with the local community, and said he has reached out to representatives to further discuss the issue.
