Local domestic help getting more expensive

The Employee Retraining Board’s “Smart Living” service, which connects local domestic workers and babysitters with employers, has reported that since less locals are becoming domestic workers, the hourly rate has increased by six percent, especially for the big spring-clean that’s coming up this Lunar New Year.

If you are in need of household help for Chinese New Year, it’s best to reserve early.

This year, domestic help for the Chinese New Year spring-clean will set employers back around HK$85 to HK$110 per hour. The closer it gets to Chinese New Year, the more expensive local domestic help will be, starting at HK$100 per hour and up. So far, there are already 750 requests for domestic help, which is expected to increase up to 5,000 bookings.
