Literally Raining On Our Parade: Typhoon might hit Hong Kong this week, just in time for the Mid-Autumn festival

Sub out those candles and paper lanterns for glowsticks and an umbrella, ’cause this Mid-Autumn festival could be a wet and wild one… and not in a fun way.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Typhoon Meranti (also known as Typhoon Ferdie, if you’ve been reading Filipino coverage) is expected to edge closer to the southern Chinese coast in the middle of the week, just in time for mooncake-nomming times.

The typhoon’s predicted to come closest to Hong Kong (within 400 kilometres or so) on Thursday, a.k.a. the actual day of the Mid-Autumn festival… you know, the holiday when people are most inclined to go moon-gazing or light lanterns on the beach. Thanks Meranti, you dick.

The HKO says we’ll be treated (read: cursed) with windy weather and squally showers on Thursday. Thankfully, the effects are expected to ease slightly on Friday, which is when the actual public holiday is taking place… although still not enough for outdoor activities. Sorry about that.

Conditions are forecasted to improve by Sunday, when we’ll get *gasp* sunny intervals between rain showers! Faaaaantastic.

Holiday-related grumblings aside, Typhoon Meranti is predicted to hit Taiwan and the Philippines pretty badly, so we should probably stop complaining.
