With just 23 percent of Hong Kongers satisfied with Leung Chun-ying’s policy address, it looks like most of us are not too happy with our Chief Executive.
Despite his announcement that more than HK$10 billion will go toward helping the poor, many of the respondents in the University of Hong Kong survey said that Leung is not doing enough to help the middle class.
According to Dr. Robert Chung, the director of HKU’s public opinion programme, the appraisal has shifted from positive to negative because the respondents who had no opinion in the beginning now held a negative view of the address. Critics have suggested that Hong Kong’s “endless political wrangling” has led to a drop in its competitiveness in recent years.
