Kwai Chung factory may be HK’s first high-rise columbarium

Disused factory on 2-6 Wing Lap Street, Kwai Chung

There’s no doubt Hong Kong lacks space, so much so that there is a shortage of urn places. To relieve this problem, a disused factory in Kwai Chung may soon be converted into a 20-storey columbarium – Le Fabergé.

Yet, the government hasn’t given the project the go ahead. One of their main concerns is traffic and crowd management during Ching Ming and Chung Yeung festivals when Chinese people worship their ancestors. The factory’s solution is to have visitors make reservations in advance via an electronic booking system during festival periods. The Lands Department also has issues with the buildings reflective domed glass roof design – said it might not be appropriate for the Chinese community.
