Police have launched a manhunt after a knife-wielding gang attacked a man in broad daylight in Hung Hom and stole USD360,000 (HKD2.8 million) cash from him this morning.

An eyewitness, surnamed Mak, told Apple Daily that he saw three to four knife-wielding men get out of a grey seven-seater on Man Yue Street at 7:58am and attack the victim, a 34-year-old Indian man called Kumar. The perpetrators snatched two suitcases away from Kumar and fled the scene by car.

However, the gang apparently drew the line for law-breaking at flouting traffic regulations, as they waited at a red light for a while before getting away, allowing Mak to get clear photos of the licence plate.

Kumar, who refused to be taken to hospital for his knife wounds, told police that the suitcases contained USD240,000 and USD120,000 in cash respectively. According to Ming Pao, the 34-year-old is a mobile phone trader.

Police shortly arrested one of the robbers on Canton Road in Mong Kok at around 9am and tracked down one of the suitcases on Fir Street, Tai Kok Tsui, based on the GPS location of a mobile phone in the luggage. The other suitcase was also discovered later at a staircase of a building on Larch Street.

Police are still looking for the other robbers.
