Kids to be dressed up as parallel traders for annual Cheung Chau parade

Upholding its reputation of mirroring society, the Piu Sik parade on Cheung Chau on Monday will see children dressed up as parallel traders. It’s going to be weird.

According to EJI, Hong Kong kids will stand atop a float holding suitcases while surrounded by some of the smugglers’ favourites goods, including milk powder and Yakult yoghurt drinks.

The tableau, as part of the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, is meant to be a nod to the somewhat violent protests against parallel traders in Hong Kong this year.

As political reform is also been a big theme right now (don’t know if you’ve noticed?), two poor kids will also be dressed up as rival politicians.

One will be pan-democratic lawmaker Albert Ho – yep, that guy who was caught looking at girls in their underwear during a LegCo meeting last year  – while another will be Chief Secretary Carrie Lam – yep, the woman that does her political parading from the safety of a double-decker bus.

We’re expecting some elaborate props.
