Kidnappers want US$11.2 million for return of Chinese tourist

Kidnappers who snatched a Chinese tourist from the Singamata Reef Resort resort in Sabah on Apr. 2 was reported to have demanded a ransom of HK$87 million (US$11.2 million).

The kidnappers are believed to be affiliated with Abu Sayyaf “sub-commander” Murphy Ambang Ladjia in the Philippines. The group, armed with M14 automatic rifles, had grabbed the Chinese tourist and a Filipino resort worker onto a boat.

Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said they received a note from the kidnappers demanding the ransom. Zahid said that he has sent their team, police, and negotiators to discuss through the middle person to negotiate the reduction of the ransom. The incident has further strained relations between China and Malaysia, especially after the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines flight which carried 154 Chinese on board.
